Canvassing for the Irish general election is in full swing. We at Give Us The Night are asking anyone who feels strongly about Irish nightlife, specifically closing times, to raise the matter with all election candidates you meet. It’s important that all parties and potential TDs know of the issues that we face here in Ireland, and know that nightlife can contribute in a much greater way to the Irish economy and to employment. We have also contacted all the main political parties regarding our campaign and mandate, inviting feedback, and will publish any responses we receive as soon as we receive them. If you are unfamiliar with our mandate, you can view it here. We know that many Irish people have other pressing matters that come above nightlife or closing times, but if you do have time to raise the matter with candidates, it would be greatly appreciated. If you would like a rundown of the main political parties, should you like to make contact, a list is here. We of course suggest speaking to or making contact with independent candidates also.
As you may have noticed, our campaign has not been as active over the last few years. It doesn’t mean we have gone away, however through our own enquiries and dialogue with the INIA and Department of Justice and Equality, we have known for some time that the matter of closing times has simply been off the table. In our early years we campaigned heavily at times when the department were announcing a new bill and also at times when they were not considering any legislative changes regarding the nightclub industry. From our experience, campaigning or stimulating discussion on the matters of nightclub licensing, is best done at the time of an election or a pending bill. As an election looms and with a new justice minister on the way, Give Us The Night will be entering a new spell of activity. We hope that others in the nightclub industry and music scene can do their best to spread the word of GUTN, and stay pro-active when possible. More updates will follow here soon.
